Sooner or later every OPay user hits a wall: a transfer that will not go through, a deposit that bounces back, a balance that refuses to grow. That wall is your account level — and it is set by Central Bank of Nigeria rules, not by OPay. Here is how the tiers work and how to move up.
Why accounts have levels at all
Nigeria uses tiered know-your-customer (KYC) rules: the less identity you have verified, the less money your account may hold and move. Every licensed wallet and bank — OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, Kuda — follows the same three-tier ladder, so upgrading is not an OPay quirk you can skip by switching apps.
What each tier unlocks
Tier 1 — opened with just your phone number and basic details. Fine for airtime and small transfers, but daily limits and the balance cap are tight.
Tier 2 — adds your verified NIN. Limits rise substantially; enough for most personal use.
Tier 3 — adds your BVN (and sometimes an address confirmation). The caps effectively disappear for personal banking, and features like higher single transfers and full savings products open up.
The exact naira figures shift as CBN rules change, so treat the numbers inside the app as the source of truth — OPay shows your current limits under your account level screen.
NIN vs BVN — which is which
The NIN (National Identification Number) comes from NIMC and identifies you as a person. The BVN (Bank Verification Number) is issued once, at any bank, and ties your biometrics to your banking identity. You need the BVN for the top tier; if you have never banked before, enrol for one at any commercial bank branch — it is free.
How to upgrade, step by step
Open OPay → tap your profile → Account Level → choose the next tier. The app asks for your NIN or BVN, then a quick selfie for the face match. Verification is usually instant; at busy periods it can take a few hours. Nothing is posted anywhere — the check runs against the official registries.
Is it safe to enter your BVN?
Inside the official app — yes: that is exactly what the BVN exists for, and every licensed institution runs the same check. What is never safe is typing your BVN into links sent by chat, “agents” on social media, or apps you cannot verify. Install OPay only from the official source on our OPay page, confirm the package name after installing, and if Play Protect prompts you, read our Play Protect guide first.
