Truecaller answers one question before you pick up: who is this. It matches an incoming number against a crowd-sourced directory built from its own users and shows a name, so unknown calls stop being a guess and known spam can be blocked outright. In markets where cold-calling, loan touts and one-ring scams are constant, that turns out to be the app's whole value. It also handles SMS, sorting bank alerts and delivery notices away from promotional noise. The trade is explicit and worth understanding: the directory exists because users contribute their contacts to it, and the app wants call-log and contact access to do its job.
Key features
- Names an unknown caller before you answer
- Blocks known spam, telemarketers and one-ring scam numbers
- Sorts SMS so bank alerts do not sit under promotions
- Search a number you were called from and did not answer
- The directory is crowd-sourced — it works because users contribute contacts

FAQ
How do I remove my number from Truecaller?
Deactivate your account inside the app first, then use the unlisting form on Truecaller's website to remove the number from the searchable directory. Doing it in that order matters — unlisting while the account is still active tends not to stick. Removal is not instant and it does not erase the number from copies already cached on other people's phones.
Does Truecaller upload my contacts?
The directory has historically been built from users' address books, and the app asks for contact access on setup. Declining it disables the features built on your address book; whether basic lookup keeps working depends on the version, since the app treats the permission set as a bundle. If the privacy trade is the sticking point, Android's own built-in caller ID and spam protection covers the basic case without any directory.
Why does caller ID stop working after a while?
Almost always battery optimisation. Truecaller has to be running to intercept an incoming call, and most Android skins aggressively suspend background apps to save power. Exclude it from battery optimisation and allow it to start automatically, and grant the display-over-other-apps permission — without that last one the overlay showing the name cannot appear.
Is the Truecaller APK safe to install?
Yes. We mirror the official Truecaller build and publish its SHA-256 checksum and a VirusTotal scan on this page, so you can verify the file is untouched before installing.
What is the Truecaller package name?
The Android application ID is com.truecaller. Check it after installing (Settings → Apps) to confirm you got the genuine app.
